Xiwen Zhang
Ultra Space Design Fellow
Xiwen Zhang is a multidisciplinary designer and artist currently pursuing an MFA in Graphic Design at the Yale School of Art. Her practice investigates perception, anticipation, and mediation through moving image, generative systems, text, and printed matter, working across analog and digital processes and their points of reversal.
Xiwen has been deeply involved with CCAM, where she was a Studio Fellow (2024–2025) and led a Wednesday Wisdom workshop on projection mapping, spanning analog camera obscura techniques to digital window projection and spatial image-making. Her ongoing work frequently extends into installation and mechanical or rule-based systems, examining perceptual loops and temporal structure.
As a graphic designer, Xiwen has worked across editorial design, exhibition identities, and experimental publications, including Retrospecta, artist books, and institution-facing printed matter. She has also taught design and foundational courses at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. At CCAM she is working on the Ultra Space book project.
