The CCAM is thrilled to welcome Kym Moore with special guest Shanti Pillai to lecture in conjunction with workshops they are offering!

Moore is Artistic Director of AntiGravity Theatre Project, and Associate Professor of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies at Brown University in Providence, RI.  Kym’s interests in span multiple genres and styles. Her work as a director is often described as “daring,” visually compelling” and very much “alive.” Recent directing credits include: Hoodoo Love by Katori Hall (Julliard Rep 2018); Hype Hero by Dominic Taylor (Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference), The Gospel of Loving Kindness by Marcus Gardley (Brown/Trinity Playwrights Repertory);Yermedea Raw by Erik Ehn, (The Factory Theatre (Boston), 95 Empire Black Box (Providence) & La Mama E.T.C. (NYC)). This production was hailed in the New York Times for its “haunting images,” and “energizing and frightening” performances. Kym directed Jomama Jones Radiate by Daniel Alexander Jones (SoHo Rep), a New York Times and Backstage Critics’ Pick. She is the recipient of a Pen and Brush Inc. award for her play, The Date. Recent Brown University theatre credits include: By The Way, Meet Vera Stark, Hype Hero, Passing Strange, Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, and Pippin, which was recognized by Broadway World.com as one of the most “whacky and innovative” interpretations of that musical worldwide. Kym is an associate member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, the Lincoln Center Theater Director’s Lab, and the National Theatre. She has taught acting and directing at numerous institutions including: Notre Dame University, Dartmouth College, Hampshire College, and Rhode Island School of Design.
 
Shanti Pillai is a scholar, artist, and writer and is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre Arts at California State University at Long Beach. Her writing has appeared in The Drama Review, Conversations Across the Field of Dance Studies, Theatre Topics, Women and Performance, the Dance Research Journal, Trialog, and the blog of the Michigan Quarterly. In 2017 Shanti was awarded a Fulbright Research Grant for her project on women artists’ contributions to contemporary performance in India across the genres of theater, dance, digital media, and performance art. Shanti is a bharatanatyam dancer trained by the great T. Balasaraswati’s two senior disciples, Nandini Ramani of Chennai and Priyamvada Sankar of Montreal. She has also worked in contemporary dance, performing from 1991-1996 with the Frente de Danza Independiente in Ecuador. Since 2005 she has worked for extensive periods in Cuba, collaborating with dancers and actors and creating and performing in original works. In 2016 she co-founded, along with actor Marc Gomes, Third Space Performance Lab, a company dedicated to exploring collaborative art making and underlying principles from traditional Indian performance.
