Yale Alums in Dance: A Panel Discussion, Part 1

Four alums pursuing diverse careers in the dance world will discuss their paths. Moderated by Margaret Spillane, Lecturer, Department of English.

Michael Apuzzo ‘05, founding producer of the Hamptons charity event Dancers For Good, has performed in several equity musical theater productions and the national tour of the Broadway show Movin’ Out. He is celebrating his tenth year performing with the NYC-based Paul Taylor Dance Company.

Sidra Bell ‘01, artistic director of Sidra Bell Dance New York, is a critically-acclaimed choreographer, consultant, and educator whose work has been commissioned and presented by major dance institutions internationally.

Emily Coates ‘06 is a dancer, choreographer, and writer who completed her Yale College degree in the midst of dancing professionally with New York City Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Twyla Tharp, and Yvonne Rainer, among others. Still actively performing, she has directed the dance studies curriculum at Yale since its inception in 2006.

Brian Seibert ‘97, has been writing reviews and articles about dance since 2002 and has been a dance critic for The New York Times since 2011. He is the author of the award-winning 2015 book What the Eye Hears: A History of Tap Dancing and a 2017 Guggenheim Fellow.

Margaret Spillane is a writer and painter who teaches in the English Department’s Creative Writing Concentration. Her play ALL DRESSED UP TO GO DREAMING was presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Dublin Theatre Festival. She writes about culture and politics for The Nation Magazine.
