FilmNet brings to Yale students THE EDIT—a three-part workshop series that seeks to teach and inspire students interested in filmmaking on the art of capturing and editing both still and moving visual images. Dispersed over the coming weeks will be THE EDIT I: Photography; The EDIT II: Video; The EDIT III: Sound.
This week’s event, the EDIT II is a videography workshop; students will be familiarized with the skills which are required to shoot and apply basic edits to videos. The guest speaker leading this event will be award-winning filmmaker, Maria Dyer who is acclaimed for her work, which she describes as a fusion of “fantasy and reality,” intended to “create emotionally visceral characters and strange, surreal worlds.”
In the workshop, she will discuss her upcoming documentary THE ROOT which is about alternatives to Western medicine in the form of psychedelics for the treatment of mental health disorders. Following is the official description:
Iboga is a small shrub that grows in the rainforests of the Congo basin in central Africa. Hidden in its root bark is the strongest psychedelic in the world. Meet Tiffany, Printassia, Jesse, Emma, and Danny: they all suffer from different mental disorders that Western medicine has been unable to treat. We follow their extraordinary yearlong healing journey using iboga as a therapeutic catalyst to uncover and heal the root cause of their suffering and to bring harmony, purpose, and joy into their lives.
